Sika – Holistic solution provider for joint sealing and adhesions
Sika’s wide-ranging portfolio includes top-class elastic sealing and bonding solutions to meet all job site needs, e.g. joint sealants for facades or resistant sealants for floor and special joints as well as multipurpose bonding solutions for interior finishing or parquet installation. The growing demand in this market is fueled by the sharper focus on energy-efficient building envelopes, the ever greater variety of materials used in construction, the increasing volume of high-rise projects and the growing significance of health, safety and environmental issues.
The Sealing and Bonding R&D department develops sealants and adhesives for construction that cover a broad range of applications. To fulfill the highest requirements, the R&D department has a high competence in all important/relevant technologies: Polyurethane, Silane terminated Polymers, Silicone, Waterborne and Pretreatment technologies.
Polyurethane sealants and adhesives are widely used and appreciated due to their versatility to adapt the mechanical properties to the application requirements. Sika is recognized as the worldwide technology leader in 1C polyurethane sealants and adhesives. With our latest innovation, the i-Cure technology, Sika can offer labeling-free polyurethane sealants and adhesives.
Silane-terminated polymers (STP) combine the properties of polyurethanes and silicones. Sika’s STP products extend the portfolio performance, especially in the applications where less surface pretreatment and isocyanate free products are requested. Our Sikaflex AT-range fulfills all relevant standards for construction sealants and shows excellent application properties.
Silicone adhesives and sealants are based on a polydimethylsiloxane polymer which imparts the products with high movement capability and excellent temperature and UV resistance. Our Sikasil RTV-1 and RTV-2 systems make perfect use of these advantages and are primarily used for the construction of glass facades and insulating glass units, the sealing of concrete joints, as well as the assembly of solar panels.
The major resin for waterborne sealants and adhesives are acrylic dispersions. The products are easy to use, easy to clean up and exhibit good color stability. The main weaknesses are the high shrinkage and the limited movement capability. Nevertheless, this technology offers an adequate solution for a lot of less demanding applications, predominantly indoor.
To assure the longevity of certain applications, the substrate needs to be treated to guarantee the adhesion. Depending on substrate and application, a cleaner, an activator or a primer can be recommended. Sika offers a range of solvent, and newly also waterborne, pretreatment products.
