YES Germany 2014 “smart energy systems”

How can renewable and smart energy systems be realized locally and globally? In the “Youth Encounter on Sustainability” (YES) course, 16 students from 12 countries met near Bremerhaven, Germany, from 7th to 19th September 2014 to discuss technologies, policies and practices towards a sustainable society. The intensive training was organized by 'myclimate' and brought together first-rate scientists and practitioners representing the German Wind industry, NGOs, and policy makers.

Shifting paradigms on energy systems is one of the most important challenges towards a sustainable future. Therefore, the YES special course on “Smart Energy Systems: Policies, Practices, and Technologies” provided deep insights into smart energy and climate technologies, policies towards energy transformations, and best practices in business and non-profit entrepreneurship.

Strong Partnerships

The 16 graduate students and young professionals from countries like Germany, Iran, Kenya, China, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Sudan learned about tools towards sustainable energy systems and shared specialized knowledge from their disciplines.

The program was enhanced by many guests including Dr. Christoph Mayer (Sika), Hinrich Eden (founder and managing director, SSC Wind), Prof. Dr. Meinhard Schulz-Baldes (director, Klimastadt Bremerhaven), Prof. Dr. Nicole Fabisch (EBC University Hamburg), Prof. Dr. Christoph Lattemann (Jacobs University Bremen), Andreas Huber (director, Desertec Foundation), Klara Lindner (project manager, Mobisol), and YES founder Dr. Roger Baud (em. social psychologist, ETH Zürich).

YES is an interactive course, where participants are expected to contribute to their own and others’ learning by sharing their own experiences, perspectives and knowledge with the group. Therefore, the diversity of the participants, from different countries and different disciplines, is central to the course concept. It is the engaged work with diverse content, perspectives, and methods that makes the YES course a truly unique experience for the students.

To realize the YES course in Germany, 'myclimate' joined forces with the program partners Sika and UNEP, the course partners BIS (Bremerhavener Gesellschaft für Innovation und Stadtentwicklung) and SSC Wind, and hosting partner EBC University Hamburg.
