Why is sustainability that important?

Sustainability is becoming a clear trend of the market and Sika, as leader in our sector, is fully committed with this strategy. Sustainability gives Sika Spain also the opportunity to differentiate ourselves by offering added valued to our customers and improving our brand awareness.

Sustainability is a key element to drive innovation in our company, and thus several R&D running projects are focused on increasing durability, improving energy, material and water efficiency. The overall objective is to increase the value for our customers and the markets, while reducing the impacts.

How are you supporting sustainability activities?

In Sika Spain we have increased resources in terms of availability of a person who is dedicated to product sustainability functions. This person has the role of supporting the target markets in integrating the relevant sustainability issues in the value selling approach, using the sustainability facts for the positioning of our brand.

With regard to our processes, we have efficiently implemented different measurements to reduce the impacts of our factories and facilities, like the upgrading of our wastewater treatment plant in Alcobendas (which allows us to save around 25% of water per month), or the installation of solar panels in our warehouse’s roof.

Internal and external trainings are an important topic in our organization too. Sustainability is a topic always on the agenda of customer and employee trainings.

What are the benefits for your organization?

One of the main achievements during this year has been the elaboration of local case studies based on relevant projects, which show the quantified benefits through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of our solutions and systems

These cases studies are successfully supporting the target markets in integrating the relevant sustainability issues in the value selling approach, using the sustainability facts for the positioning against our competitors.

The concept was well integrated especially in Roofing (promoting our FPO Sarnafil membranes against other solutions; bituminous, EPDM, ..), but projects from the other target markets Flooring, Refurbishment, Waterproofing, Concrete, Industry and Sealing & Bonding were also carried out , or are running or planned in the near future.

For one of the Roofing projects, the results of LCA evaluation were decisive for the customer, who finally decided to install the high solar reflective white membrane over the beige one, based on the reduction of the overall environmental performance, and therefore less costs in the long run.

These projects allow Sika to demonstrate its competence, commitment and expertise in sustainability by offering customers high-performance tailor-made solutions to fulfil their requirements from a technical, economic and an environmental point of view.
