HABOM Hangar of Turkish Airlines

The Aviation Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Center (HABOM) of Turkish Airlines has been built in Istanbul, Turkey, with a total area of 40’000m2. Sika offered a Sikafloor®-21 PurCem flooring system specification.

Approach: Environmental Performance Study

The customer was highly interested in details regarding durability, performance, especially on benefits the system could bring in the use phase, namely cleaning and maintenance. To help illustrate these benefits from a holistic approach, Sika Turkey opted for complementing the technical information with an environmental performance study of the system. Therefore a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was used to evaluate and compare the specified Sikafloor®-21 PurCem flooring system against ceramic tiles, which are typically applied in industrial areas in Turkey.

The evaluation was made over the entire life cycle for a period of 20 years, considering maintenance and refurbishment, as well as disposal of the systems at the end of life. During that period, the system with ceramic tiles is replaced completely (typical life time of ceramic tiles in the Turkish market is expected to be 10 years).

Result: 70% less impact
Result: 70% less impact

For the project area, and for the 20 years lifespan, the Sikafloor®-21 PurCem flooring system has significantly lower impacts when compared to the ceramic tiles. In terms of relevant environmental indicators such as Energy Footprint, Carbon Footprint and summer smog potential it entails around 70% less impacts.

Benefit: Proven durability and performance with Sikafloor®-21 PurCem

The Target Market Flooring is currently one of the priority markets in Turkey. There was a sales training in Turkey which focussed on the relevant aspects for flooring and sustainability, and this case study is the first to have them quantified for a local, easily recognizable project.

Sika Turkey aims to use this example to promote the Sikafloor®-21 PurCem system as a sustainable solution, with locally produced components. It also positions the Sika solution against ceramic tiles, which are the standard solution in Turkey, besides the fact that it is less brittle than ceramic tiles, has no need for adhesives and also no joints, which are the weakest point of ceramic tiles floor.

More value - Less Impact

Why Sikafloor®-21 PurCem is a good choice for the HABOM project:

  • Proven durability and performance: it also endures various stresses and exposures, including thermal variations, traffic impact, mechanical and chemical exposure
  • Wide application range: it offers high durability in areas subject to heavy loading, abrasion and high chemical exposure. Besides, it is suitable for thermal shock areas, maintaining its physical characteristics through a wide temperature and acidic environments
  • Easy maintenance: due to its seamless surface and absence of joints
  • Solvent free, low VOC emissions
  • Cost effective: due to its high durability, and frequency of replacement being lower than the generic alternative solution available in the Turkish market.
  • Sustainable solution: provides superior performance over traditional solutions which is reflected in a better environmental and resources performance of the building
