Sika® Ensures a solid future for refurbished tower block

A complete range of concrete repair, protection and anti-carbonation systems from Sika have played an important part in the restoration of a concrete tower block in the Wirral, whilst ensuring minimum disruption to the residents.

Forming part of an ambitious £32 million refurbishment programme by client Magenta Living, the 14 storey Knowsley Court in New Ferry is one of eight tower blocks that has been upgraded having fallen into disrepair. With the intention of repairing and protecting concrete surfaces, the specification included the Sika® MonoTop® repair system, and the anti-carbonation coating Sikagard®-675W.

These systems have an impressive track record which goes back more than 15 years, and conform to the performance requirements of the more recent EN standards, demonstrating Sika’s historical commitment to providing long term technically correct construction solutions.

Construction Techniques Limited applied Sika® MonoTop® – a cementitious two-component system which consists of polymer modified mortars – to smooth out the imperfections and to provide a cost effective solution ready for overcoating. With a good resistance to water and chloride penetration, it will help to protect the building’s concrete exterior from future damage.

To provide an overall layer of protection and in order to provide a striking design, Sikagard®-675W ElastoColor in four unique colours was applied to the concrete facade. Used to aesthetically enhance concrete substrates and particularly suited as a final protective coating for facades, the anti-carbonation treatment provides a high quality yet economical water-based, acrylic coating to protect against weathering and ageing.

Sika‘s concrete repair and protection solutions are designed to rehabilitate and restore concrete surfaces back to their original quality.  Concrete repair mortars, anti-corrosion coatings, corrosion inhibitors, reinforcement corrosion protectors and the full Galvashield range of embedded galvanic anodes make up the extensive range that Sika offers. Suitable for a wide range of concrete repair applications from bridges to social housing, car parks to commercial buildings, all of these products are backed up by a highly experienced technical team who offer expert specification advice and support.

With this project now complete – Sika offered the perfect regeneration solution for the refurbishment and long term protection of this residential tower block.
