Achieving a flawless, smooth surface with Sikafloor®-122 Level Universal is easy and straightforward with the right preparation and application steps. Follow this step-by-step guide to ensure a perfect finish every time.
1. priming: Prepare Your Substrate for Success
Normal Absorbent Concrete/Screed:
- No priming required for strong, rough-textured surfaces.
- Procedure: Damp down the floor with clean water, ensuring no puddles remain. Allow the surface to dry. If water is absorbed immediately, treat the surface as porous (see below).
Porous/Concrete Screed:
- Remove all dust and loose material (preferably with a brush or vacuum).
- Prime the surface with SikaBond® PVA+ (1 part PVA to 4 parts clean water). Ensure the surface is well coated and allow it to dry.
- Highly porous surfaces: Apply a second coat of primer if needed to prevent pinholes, cracking, or debonding.
Non-Porous/Dense Substrates (e.g., Quarry Tiles, Terrazzo, Smooth Concrete):
- Mechanically roughen the surface (e.g., grinding or scarifying) to create a mechanical key. Specialist advice may be required.
- Alternatively, apply a bonding coat of undiluted SikaBond® PVA+ and let it become tacky before applying Sikafloor®-122 Level Universal.
2. MIXING: Get the Right Consistency
- Water to Powder Ratio: Add 3.4 - 3.5 litres of clean water for every 20kg bag of Sikafloor®-122 Level Universal.
- Mixing: Always add the powder to the water. Use a mechanical mixer with a spiral mixing paddle at a slow speed until the mix is smooth and fully combined. Hot
- Weather: In hot conditions, remix the product during its 15-20 minute pot life to reactivate the self-levelling properties. DO NOT add extra water or attempt to remix after the product begins to set.
- Mixing Time: Ensure you mix for a minimum of 3 minutes to achieve a smooth, lump-free consistency.
- Mixing Tool: Use an electric stirrer with a speed of less than 500 rpm.
3. APPLICATION: Spread the Level
- Thickness: Sikafloor®-122 Level Universal can be applied from 6mm down to a feather edge.
- Procedure: Pour the mixed product onto the floor and spread evenly using a steel trowel. Form a thin, tight scrape coat within the working time.
- Smoothing: Immediately add more mixed product as needed for a smooth finish. If necessary, trowel the surface again when it is still damp but firm to the touch.
- Uniform Finish: Use a spiked roller within the working time for a more uniform surface appearance.
- Layering: If required, apply additional layers (each layer should not exceed 6mm in thickness). Prime between layers with a diluted solution of SikaBond® PVA+ (1 part PVA to 3 parts water).
4. CURING TREATMENT: Timings & Tips
- Cures within 2-4 hours: It Is ready to take foot traffic.
- Cures within 8 hours: It Is ready to be overlaid.
- Warm Weather: Mist spray the surface to prevent moisture loss and avoid drying shrinkage cracking.
- Avoid draughts: Keep the area free from through draughts that can cause moisture loss and disrupt curing.
5. CLEANING OF TOOLS: Keep it Clean
- Immediate Cleaning: All tools and equipment should be cleaned with water immediately after use, before the levelling compound hardens.
