Sika® Black Jack®-901 Black Bitumen Paint

SOLVENT-BASED, FULL-BODIED BLACK BITUMEN PAINT FOR METAL PROTECTION

Sika® Black Jack®-901 Black Bitumen Paint is a solvent-based, full-bodied black bituminous paint. When dry, the product forms an odourless and taint free black film suitable for metal protection as well as overcoating wood and felt.

Usage

Sika® Black Jack®-901 Black Bitumen Paint provides an effective waterproof, weatherproof, corrosion-resistant protective coating. It is resistant to low concentrations of alkalis and acids and can withstand prolonged oxidation. It is suitable for application to a wide variety of materials including iron, steel, lead, zinc, aluminium, asbestos-cement, concrete, stone, wood, felt and brick and is mainly used for:
  • Metal protection - corrugated iron sheets, fire escapes, stairways, ladders, storage tanks, gutters, downpipes, fences, railings, gates etc.
  • As a protective coating for concrete structures, stone, brick, concrete screeds and sand/cement surfaces.
  • Overcoating felt/wood.

Chemical Resistance

Resistant to: most salt solutions, dilute acids and alkali, and water.
Not resistant to: oils, solvents and some detergent solutions.

Porous surfaces: Approx. 4-6 m2/L.

Application steps

SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

All surfaces must be dry, stable and thoroughly cleaned to remove all traces of dirt, dust and grease. Wet surfaces should be brushed free from water and wiped with a dry cloth to remove any moisture which remains. Repair cracks and holes using Black Jack® 903 Bitumen Trowel Mastic, stick down loose felt etc. with Black Jack® 904 Roof Felt Adhesive. Metal surfaces should be wire-brushed to remove rust. Where long term protection is required an initial treatment of a rust-inhibitive product such as red lead or zinc phosphate should be used. Loose or blistered paint should be removed, as should tar-based paint systems. New galvanised surfaces should be roughened with a wire brush or treated with a proprietary etch primer.  Concrete, cement and other porous surfaces should be primed using Black Jack® 902 Bitumen & Flashing Primer and allowed to dry. Where there is green growth present, clean surfaces with Sika® Mouldbuster as directed, before proceeding. 

APPLICATION

Sika® Black Jack®-901 Black Bitumen Paint is ready for use and should not be thinned. Stir thoroughly before use. Apply by brush or spray. A minimum of two coats of Sika® Black Jack®-901 Black Bitumen Paint should be applied. The first coat should be allowed to dry (normally 2-4 hours depending on weather conditions) before the second coat is applied. For enhanced UV protection; apply Black Jack® 907 Solar Reflective Paint once the 901 Black Bitumen Paint has dried.

CLEANING OF TOOLS

All tools should be cleaned immediately after use with Sika® Wonder Wipes or white spirit. Any spillage should be wiped off surfaces before the bitumen paint has set.
