Cromar® Bitumen Paint

Solvent based bituminous paint.

A solvent based general purpose, black bituminous paint for waterproofing and weather protecting steelwork, asphalt, wood, concrete and potable water tanks. When dry it forms an odourless and taint free bitumen film.
Bitumen Paint forms a waterproof, weatherproof, corrosion resistant protective coating. It is resistant to low concentrations of alkalis and acids and can withstand prolonged oxidation.

Usage

The coverage per Litre is dependent upon the porosity of the surface;
- Metals & Smooth Surfaces: 10 m2 per Litre should be attained.
- Porous Surfaces: Considerably less.
Application steps

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Care needs to be taken over the preparation of surfaces before application. All surfaces must be free from oil, dirt, dust and loose debris. On metal surfaces all loose rust should be removed using a wire brush and, where advanced signs of corrosion are evident, the area should be treated with a rust inhibitor. A minimum of two coats of Bitumen Paint should be applied, the first coat being allowed to dry before the second is applied.

Drinking Water Tanks;
Surfaces should be dry and clear of millscale, rust and dirt. All surfaces should be degreased immediately prior to application. Brush application is preferred to ensure a thorough coating of all recesses, edges, rivets and bolts. Apply two coats, allowing at least a 24 hour drying period between coats (drying may be assisted by the provision of a forced air draught). It is important that the first coat is completely dry before application of the second coat. Use clean, uncontaminated application equipment. After the second coat has dried, and before the tank is put into service, it should be filled with cold drinking water and drained after no less than 4 hours. If a taste is detected in the water, the process should be repeated.

A certified (Reg 31 / BS6920) paint, that will not react with the Bitumen paint, must be used as a final coat.

Porous surfaces
Where the surface being treated is porous, an initial coat of Bitumen Primer should be applied.

CLEANING OF TOOLS

Tools may be cleaned with white spirit. Minor spillages should be wiped off surfaces before the paint has dried.
Major spillages should be mopped up immediately with an inert, absorbent material, such as sand, and disposed of in accordance with regulations.
