Why Choose a Single Ply Roofing System?

Single-ply roof systems are a popular waterproofing solution for either new build or roof refurbishment projects. Sika single-ply roof systems are generally classified to BRoofT4, (subject to build-up), so can satisfy regulatory requirements for fire performance.  They are ideal for buildings with a weight and load-bearing consideration because of the membrane’s structural strength. Along with BBA certification, Sika single-ply roof systems are quick to install, which makes them a cost-effective solution. 

With some of our membranes being as thick as 2.5mm, Sika Sarnafil AT has the flexibility and longevity of a traditional PVC single-ply membrane but is a hybrid FPO/ EPDM membrane and is Cradle to Cradle certified by the C2C Institute.

Our singly ply membranes are dimensionally stable due to their reinforcement, meaning that they do not shrink or lose their shape. They are UV resistant and are tested for UV ageing to the highest international standard for waterproofing membranes which requires exposure to over 5,000 hours of UV testing in accordance with EN 13956.

However, we go above and beyond, with our membranes withstanding 10,000 hours of UV exposure. All of our Single-Ply membranes are available for specification as part of a bespoke, complete roofing system for any project.

Mechanically Fixed

Ideal application method for lightweight metal deck structures and buildings, such as distribution and logistics centres, warehouses, supermarkets, datacentres. Where there is a greater force of wind around the roof area, a single ply mechanically fixed system is required.

The Future of Single Ply Membranes

Sarnafil Advanced Technology was the first single-ply membrane in the UK to achieve Cradle to Cradle Silver certification. Introduced to the UK market in 2022, Sarnafil Advanced Technology combines the flexibility of PVC with the material characteristics of TPO membranes. The formulation does not include heavy metals, oils, chlorine, or plasticisers. All claims regarding product composition and certification are supported by independent assessment.

Temple Park Crescent is a new build, sustainable residential development located on the Union Canal in Merchiston, Edinburgh. S1 Developments delivered this challenging project as developer and main contractor alongside Ashton Building Systems as the specialist roofing contractor. The goal was to provide a sustainable block of high-quality homes, which integrate fully into the existing tenement form of the street. S1 Developments specialise in challenging city centre sites, and having worked with this client for many years, we were approached as the partner of choice to find the best roofing solution to suit their needs.

The Hallsworth Road site was acquired by social housing developer, For Housing following the move of local Rugby League Club Salford City Roosters to a neighbouring location. The developer worked closely with Salford City Council, the rugby club and the local community to build essential housing that would be both affordable and eco-responsible. This has resulted in the construction of 48 new homes, comprising 30 apartments and 18 two and three-bedroom homes, including 4 bungalows. The roofing system chosen was fundamental in meeting the project goals of sustainability and affordability.

Originally known as Shaftesbury House, the building was opened in 1938 to house migrant workers in Leeds that had previously been living in appalling conditions. The development had deteriorated and was eventually closed and boarded up in 1998. As part of a regeneration programme of the area, Leeds City Council co ordinated the redevelopment of the site into what is now known as Greenhouse, a mixed-use block of eco-flats.

Celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019, St. George’s Weybridge – a Roman Catholic private day school in Surrey – marked the occasion with the introduction of an exciting new architectural development. Transforming its existing, functionally simple sports hall into an inspiring, beautifully designed facility, the College’s accommodation brief comprised a premiership level hockey pitch and six-court sports hall, as well as a strength and conditioning suite, dance studio and flexible multi-use areas for group activities, meetings, presentations, exhibitions, open days and ‘match teas’. Designed by global architectural practice Scott Brownrigg, the architect’s vision was to create a contemporary and timeless building that would inspire students to achieve their very best.

A £40 million investment, 13 roof areas, eight different roof levels, and a steady stream of visiting students to keep happy throughout – the University of Reading (UoR) Library’s complete refurbishment was a large and challenging project spanning three years. Originally opened in 1964 and later extended in 1985, the library’s internal and external revamp was designed to increase space, improve facilities for individual study, provide better access and security across the building, and improve energy efficiency.

Set over 48 acres, Cargiant at East Lane Business Park is London’s largest used car showroom, holding an impressive 6000 cars in one location. To keep the vast number of cars protected, an effective waterproof roofing system was needed for the new build showroom. However, due to the thick insulation and concrete deck on the roof, a traditional mechanically fixed system was not possible, meaning a durable alternative needed to be found.
