PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Tettenhall College, a prestigious private school in Wolverhampton, is renowned for its rich history and heritage. Among its various facilities is a dedicated billiards room, a cherished space where students gather to relax, cook, and socialise. The building exterior roof, spanning 73m2, was in need of replacement and this project presented several challenges due to the building’s architectural complexity and historical importance.
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
The solution needed to seamlessly blend with the existing aesthetics of the school while providing modern, sustainable roofing technology. Ensuring the project was completed during the winter months added further logistical challenges, necessitating careful planning and safety measures.
SIKA SOLUTION
The solution came in the form of Sarnafil® AT, specifically in Basalt Grey (RAL 7012), marking the first use of this product in the UK. Sarnafil was chosen primarily due to its recent achievement of Cradle to Cradle® certification, making it the first roofing solution in the UK to receive this sustainability credential.
The Basalt Grey membrane was selected to emulate a lead-like finish, which was important to ensure the new roof would fit in with the historical aesthetics of the rest of the old school buildings, allowing the school to maintain its heritage while upgrading its functionality.
PCPT Architects led the design, with Reynolds Conservation managing on-site health and safety and installed by Contractors De Rosa Installations Ltd. Given the project’s winter timeline, comprehensive risk assessments and method statements were meticulously crafted to ensure every aspect of the project was carefully considered and planned. To protect workers from the inclement weather, the site was scaffolded and outfitted with a canopy, allowing work to proceed safely and efficiently.
The Sarnafil® AT system not only provided a low-maintenance and long-lasting solution but also guaranteed easy cleaning and upkeep, essential for the building’s continued use. The entire roofing system came with a Performance Plus guarantee of 25 years, ensuring peace of mind for the college’s administration.
The successful installation of the Sarnafil® AT roof on the Billiards Room at Tettenhall College met all architectural and historical requirements while providing a modern, sustainable roofing solution. This project’s success led to the subsequent use of Sarnafil® AT on the Tettenhall Flag Tower, further demonstrating the product’s effectiveness and reliability in heritage-sensitive environments.
Tettenhall College now enjoys a durable, aesthetically pleasing roof that preserves its historical character while embracing modern sustainability standards.
