PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project centred on resolving persistent water ingress affecting the lower flat roof areas of a fully operational school. The works required a full refurbishment of the existing single-ply roofing system, which had deteriorated to the point where its integrity and weathering performance were compromised. To deliver a durable, long-term solution, the existing membrane was completely stripped, with all debris and contaminants removed in accordance with Sika’s installation guidelines.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

The works were carried out by roofing contractor, Clarke Roofing. Critical components including pressed metal parapet cappings, fall-restraint systems, and the freestanding handrail were carefully dismantled to ensure safe access and to protect key building elements. These were reinstated on completion to maintain the building’s safety and compliance requirements.

SIKA SOLUTION

A new, high-performance roofing build-up was then installed, comprising an air vapour control layer (AVCL), tapered insulation system, carrier membrane and Sika® Decothane® Ultra liquid-applied waterproofing. This system not only addressed historical water ingress but provided upgraded thermal performance and enhanced resilience.

For Clarke Roofing, delivering the project within a live, fully occupied school environment required careful planning and coordination. Maintaining safe, unobstructed access routes for students, staff and visitors was therefore critical. Achieving a visually seamless finish during masonry repair also involved detailed material and finish matching. Mortar samples were prepared, trialled and approved prior to installation to guarantee that the restored areas blended invisibly with the existing façade.

The completed roof delivers a clean, modern and visually cohesive finish that enhances the overall appearance of the school building. The Sika® Decothane® Ultra system provides a uniform, attractive surface while offering exceptional durability and long-term protection against weathering.

Waterproofing Roof System

The reinstated parapet cappings, carefully matched masonry repairs and precise repointing contribute to a visually consistent building envelope, with the refurbished roof now complementing the surrounding structure. The result is a sharper, more refined aesthetic that elevates the school’s external appearance while delivering high-performance waterproofing.

The combination of improved durability, upgraded thermal efficiency and enhanced visual appeal ensures the school benefits from a robust, long-lasting and visually impressive roofing solution.
