For the fourth year in a row, Sika has signed up to be the premium sponsor for The Concrete Society Awards – a ceremony that celebrates and rewards excellence in concrete.

The Awards, which were first founded in 1968, will this year take place on 17th November 2021 at London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel and is set to attract around 400 guests.

What is the Concrete Society?

The Concrete Society is a member-based body, with no affiliation to trade or corporate organisations.

Proud to be recognised as independent, the Society has built on its technical base to become a leading provider of information, serving the needs of clients, architects, engineers, specifiers, suppliers, contractors and users of concrete, with emphasis on quality and competitiveness.

Established in 1966, the society currently has 11 regional committees across the UK and more than 700 members from large corporates such as Sika, to small firms, academic institutions and individual memberships. This translates into approximately 2,750 nominees who the society corresponds with regularly.*

The Sika sponsorship of The Concrete Society Awards

Each year, The Concrete Society awards one outright winner, as well as recognising a number of highly commended projects. Previous winners include Hackney Wick Station Redevelopment, Mersey Gateway Bridge and Lyme Regis Phase IV Sea Wall and Promenade.

Sika is supporting the awards as principal sponsor and backs the event in order to help demonstrate the industry’s innovation and excellence in construction involving concrete.

This year’s shortlisted projects

Sika products were used for two of the projects shortlisted, including the South West Rail Resilience Scheme in Dawlish and 80 Charlotte Street in London.

In order to meet customer needs and restore the Dawlish seafront, the Hanson UK team developed several bespoke mixes for the project. For the seawall’s new foundations, the team turned to Sika for an underwater microsilica mix, SikaFume®-50 S, that was high-density, high-design class and high-consistency.

80 Charlotte Street in London is a 320,000 ft2 BREEAM Excellent commercial building in the heart of Fitzrovia. Elements of the existing structure had to be strengthened, with Sika being approached by the structural engineers to see if its technical team could offer a solution to strengthen a number of the existing reinforced concrete slabs.

Sika® CarboDur®, also known as carbon fibre composite plates, was applied to the concrete to increase its load capacity to ensure the requirements of the new loadings were met.

"I’ve been a member of The Concrete Society for more than 25 years and this year’s awards will be the first of my presidential tenure. “Having worked in the world of concrete since 1982, I’m well aware of how vital The Concrete Society is to the industry and its workforce and I’m very much looking forward to celebrating our collective successes on the night." Nick Dawson, National Key Account Manager at Sika and recently-appointed President of The Concrete Society
"The Concrete Society is a leading voice in our industry, promoting best practice in order to uphold standards, especially in the areas of technical guidance and training. “We are advocates of best practice and events like this are a great platform, not only to support the society itself, but also demonstrate our commitment to the industry, its supply chain and associated key companies and their figureheads" Drummond Welsh, Head of Sales and Technical for Concrete at Sika
