Sika® Watertight Concrete was used on The Pods, a high quality, futuristic leisure centre, that has recently opened in Scunthorpe. Constructed by Bowmer and Kirkland for North Lincolnshire Council, this unique structure is made up with a collection of five giant timber framed domes. It replaces the 27 year old Scunthorpe Leisure Centre.

The £21 million facility boasts a 25m swimming pool, a training pool, state-of-the-art gym, dance studio, six multi-use sports halls, café and crèche. The swimming pool and training pool, the surrounding slab and the filter/plant room are all constructed using Sika® Watertight Concrete, to ensure total watertightness.

The unusual multi-domed structure is designed to exist in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

The building envelope includes a sedum green roof, single ply membrane, individually laid shingles with a steel and glass entrance dome. Many environmental considerations are designed into the complex, such as a bio-mass boiler and recycling facilities.

Project Requirements

A totally watertight solution for a swimming pool, training pool and plant room.

Sika Solutions

Tarmac, who supplied all the concrete on the project, supplied 600m3 of Sika® Watertight Concrete. This BBA certified system, has a successful track record going back over 50 years.

The Sika® Watertight Concrete admixture was added to the concrete in water-soluble bags designed to make production of the concrete much easier and quicker. The bags were simply added to the concrete mix through the back of the ready mix truck prior to leaving the plant. This simple operation is fast and easy and ensures a correct dosage every time.

Construction joints were sealed with the SikaSwell® jointing system, which consists of joint sealing profiles that expand on contact with water to seal any voids between adjoining concrete slabs and walls.

The Pods was crowned the ‘most sustainable building/ development of the year’ at the Property Industry Awards Yorkshire, and was shortlisted in the sport building category at the World Architecture Festival Awards held in Barcelona.
