Tipton, United Kingdom

This project is a 25m main pool, a teaching pool and corresponding balance tanks, that were installed to maintain a constant water level in the pools at the recently opened Tipton Leisure Centre.

The new £8 million centre, which is being run by the Sandwell Leisure Trust, was designed by Sandwell Architects for Sandwell Council and replaces the old Tipton Swimming Centre which was opened in 1933.

Apart from the swimming pools, the centre includes a family changing village, a state-of-the-art dance and fitness studio and a 54-station gymnasium.

Project Requirements

A cost effective watertight solution for the swimming pools and tanks was required, that would ensure complete watertightness.

Sika Solutions

The BBA approved Sika® Watertight Concrete System was an important ingredient in the construction of the swimming pools and tank. Sika® Watertight Concrete contains state-of-the-art concrete admixtures that firstly reduce the water/cement ratio, thus increasing the density of the mix and minimising the size, volume and continuity of the concrete’s pores and secondly, fill the remaining pores, ensuring a completely watertight finish. Sika provided support on site during construction, supplied 500m3 of Sika® Watertight Concrete to the project. The simplicity in using watertight concrete ensured that the centre was opened on budget and on time. The SikaSwell® jointing system, which consists of joint sealing profiles that expand on contact.
