Behind every incredible feat of engineering there are many unsung heroes.

Some are obvious: the architects and construction workers whose mind and muscle power helps erect modern infrastructural wonders in the form of towering bridges; multifunctional business and housing complexes, and other structures less awe-inspiring, but just as important to 21st century living, such as car parks.

Also in the ‘unsung’ bracket are the hidden-yet-ingenious processes which keep these wondrous buildings standing for as long as required. Sika® FerroGard® 903+ falls into this particular category.

Invisible Invincible

This superbly-effective corrosion inhibitor is a classic example of a behind-the-scenes ‘influence’, providing an impregnation coating for hardened concrete. Once applied, it is designed to penetrate the surface and diffuse in vapour or liquid form to the concrete’s embedded steel reinforcing bars.

This is where the FerroGard’s inhibitive properties take effect, forming a protective layer on the steel surface to prevent corrosion caused by the presence of chlorides as well as by carbonation of concrete. Not all corrosion inhibitors follow the Sika® FerroGard® path – the one which leads to most resistance, it could be said. Its competitors (hydrophobic impregnations) indirectly have an effect on the corrosion on the rebar by restricting water and chloride ingress.

Although its penetrate and protect properties are created from the most in-depth, innovative technological research the engineering world has to offer, Sika FerroGard’s application is simplicity itself, via  spray, brush or roller – a straightforward operation with spectacularly-effective results.

Sika® FerroGard® 903+ extends the service life of any reinforced concrete structure without the need for actual concrete removal, as part of Sika’s Total Corrosion Management Systems. It’s recommended for all steel-reinforced, pre-stressed, precast, post tensioned or marine concrete. When used with an anti-carbonation coating, Sika® FerroGard® 903+ forms part of the Sika guarantee – a benefit rival systems are unable to offer. The system also complies with BS EN 1504 Class II, relating to penetration of up to 10mm in concrete.

Why is the availability of corrosion inhibitor products of Sika® FerroGard® 903+ quality of such importance to the construction-based marketplace? Here’s a good reason: chloride- induced corrosion is considered the most significant cause of reinforced concrete deterioration globally. It means there are structures worldwide which could be saved from unnecessary and potentially costly repair by the application of Sika® FerroGard® 903+ – a liquid-based concrete lifesaver.

Points to Consider

Sika® FerroGard® 903+ penetrates the surface and diffuses in vapour or liquid form

It forms a protective film to the concrete’s the steel rebar

Its application negates the need for concrete removal

It’s recommended for steel-reinforced concrete, buildings and infrastructure exposed to corrosive environments

When used with an anti-carbonation protective coating, Sika® FerroGard® 903+ forms part of the Sika guarantee
