Sika supplied a highly crack-bridging, highly-durable car park deck system and concrete repair solution to ensure the watertight restoration of a city centre, multi-storey car park, which was carried out with minimum disruption to shoppers and nearby businesses.
St Andrews MSCP, a vital facility for visitors to Norwich City Centre, required urgent repair and refurbishment. The surface of the six-storey site’s exposed top-deck had become cracked and worn since the building’s construction in 2005. To eliminate the long-term risk of water ingress and provide a safe environment for drivers and pedestrians, Norwich City Council – in conjunction with Sika recommended specialist contractors – required a replacement waterproof deck system of proven strength and long-term quality. Sikafloor®-RB58 proved ideal.
Renowned for its superb crack-bridging properties, Sikafloor®-RB58 provided the car park with a slip and abrasion-proof top deck. Fast-curing and easy to apply, the system comes with a 10-year warranty. It comprises several layers to guarantee a robust, watertight, performance. Sikafloor®-RB58 has been tested in accordance with BS EN 1062-7 for dynamic crack bridging class B 4.2; a test carried out at a temperature of -20°C, a harsher environment than even the UK winter normally provides.
For the car park’s intermediate decks and ramps, Sikafloor®-RB28 was applied. The system is also known for its superb crack-bridging properties, as well as its slip and abrasion-resistance. Its fast-curing time is essential for public facility repairs where rapid refurbishment and traffic management is required to return a site to full operation as quickly as possible.
Sika® Armorex® L2 High Flow, a one-part, high-flow, rapid-strength cementitious grout, provided a strong, chloride-free repair solution for the car park’s existing pre-cast planks. To accommodate movement to the refurbished surface, Sika® FloorJoint PD, a prefabricated, carbon-fibre reinforced polymer composite panel with high physical properties, was applied to all joints.
Chris Martin, Commercial Director for the Sika Specialist Recommended Contractor, said: “Sikafloor®-RB58 is a relatively new system from a manufacturer of tried-and-trusted car park deck and concrete repair systems. St Andrews MSCP was a large-scale project, which required a quality refurbishment in the shortest possible time. Sikafloor®-RB58 satisfied both criteria – performing as promised. For a high-performance product, it’s so easy to use. We were extremely pleased – as was the client – with the results.”
Refurbishment of St Andrews MSCP began in September 2015, and thanks to the rapid-curing, easy-to-install qualities of Sikafloor®-RB58, was completed in April 2016 to the client’s strict deadline and full satisfaction. The system provided Norwich City Council with an upgraded car park, which will not only reduce the need for costly repair maintenance, has eliminated the risk of water ingress for many years to come.
