Intensive Green Roofs

Intensive green roof systems are designed to accommodate deeper substrate layers, enabling the support of vegetation such as turf, shrubs, and—where structurally appropriate—small trees. These systems are typically specified for projects requiring accessible roof spaces that incorporate both hard and soft landscaping elements. Where ecological enhancement is a project objective, certain roof systems may be designed to support biodiversity by incorporating features that encourage habitat creation. These systems should be selected based on ecological assessments or biodiversity action plans relevant to the site. 

Key System Features

  • Protection fleece layer: Designed to safeguard the underlying Sika waterproofing membrane. 
  • Drainage board: 40mm drainage board with integrated filter fleece, intended to retain water and assist in managing rainfall. 
  • SikaRoof® Intensive Substrate: Formulated to support deeper-rooting vegetation and retain moisture.
  • System: Suitable for projects requiring a mix of hard and soft landscaping, where a functional and accessible roof space is part of the design intent.

Salford community project, Working in Wood, is run by Incredible Education CIC, a social enterprise providing nature-based services for local communities through horticulture and forest school activities. The Cleavley Community Forest Garden also has wood kitchen, a poly tunnel, outdoor learning area, an edible garden that supplies fruit and veg and a coffee shop & cafe that serves plant-based and healthy food.

Temple Park Crescent is a new build, sustainable residential development located on the Union Canal in Merchiston, Edinburgh. S1 Developments delivered this challenging project as developer and main contractor alongside Ashton Building Systems as the specialist roofing contractor. The goal was to provide a sustainable block of high-quality homes, which integrate fully into the existing tenement form of the street. S1 Developments specialise in challenging city centre sites, and having worked with this client for many years, we were approached as the partner of choice to find the best roofing solution to suit their needs.
