Ballasted Blue Roofs
A ballasted blue roof is a type of blue roof system where stormwater retention occurs beneath a layer of heavy ballast materials, such as gravel, stone, or concrete pavers. These ballast materials serve a dual function of holding the roofing membrane in place using weight rather than mechanical fasteners, and allowing water to be temporarily stored in the void spaces beneath or around the ballast, enabling controlled, delayed drainage.
Sika® Ballasted Blue Roofs
A Sika Ballasted Blue Roof combines a SikaShield® 2 Layer Reinforced Bitumen Membrane Warm Roof, or SikaShield® Hot Melt Inverted Warm Roof, with a Sika® RetentionRoof Blue Roof System that is then covered with 20mm to 40mm rounded gravel ballast.
Typically used in new build construction, Sika® Ballasted Blue Roofs are also suitable for retrofit/ refurbishment applications with all systems specified with BBA Certification.
When installed by a Sika® Verified or Certified Roofing Contractor with Sika® NatureRoof Registered Contractors the project will be eligible for a comprehensive Sika® System Guarantee.
