PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Aberdeen Mortuary is a new build two-storey all-electric building providing family consultation and private areas; post-mortem rooms; storage for loved ones; meeting rooms; offices for Police Scotland and a teaching and museum area. The project replaces outdated mortuary buildings with the aim of supporting the essential requirements of an increasing population in the Northeast of Scotland and the Northern Isles. Aberdeen City Council and NHS Grampian collaboratively appointed Kier to deliver this £30m Integrated Mortuary at their Foresterhill Health Campus in Aberdeen.
Procladd (Scotland) Ltd was appointed on the project to install an extensive hot melt roof. SikaShield® Hot Melt Structural Waterproofing System was specified due to its ability to provide a highly durable and monolithic waterproofing solution for an inverted roof that had specific requirements for the installation of plant alongside the ability to accommodate regular maintenance traffic.
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
Part of an ambitious project to design and construct a truly innovative mortuary, this building needed to be aesthetically appealing, whilst meeting the needs of a modern net zero carbon building. A suitable cost-effective roofing solution was therefore required for all parts of the mortuary facility. Particular attention was required for the extensive flat roofing area because of the major plant equipment that was needed to operate the mortuary underneath. Sika therefore worked in strong collaboration with existing partners, Keppie Design and Procladd (Scotland) Ltd in order to propose a solution that would meet all requirements.
SIKA SOLUTION
Working collaboratively with Keppie Design and Procladd, SikaShield® Hot Melt Structural Waterproofing System was selected as the perfect solution for this roofing project. SikaShieldTM Hot Melt Structural Waterproofing System is a highly durable two-layer reinforced system. This was hot applied with a polyester reinforcement fleece and protection layers to give a total waterproofing performance as part of the SikaShield® Hot Melt Structural Waterproofing System.
Completely robust in its nature, SikaShield® Hot Melt Structural Waterproofing System provided the ideal solution for this expansive mortuary flat roof, that needed to be hard wearing and durable to suit the installation of major mortuary plant equipment and the longevity of the building.
Sikatherm® EPS insulation was used to support the performance goals the client aspired to for the building. For the roof canopy and three smaller ancillary buildings Sikaplan® SGK-18 Single Ply Membrane was installed as the most cost effective and energy efficient solution. This multi-layer, synthetic roof waterproofing sheet is based on premium-quality polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with inlay of glass non-woven and polyester fleece backing and is ideal for use in exposed adhered roof waterproofing applications such as the canopy roofing at Aberdeen Mortuary. The resulting roof is a celebration of Sika solutions and is now part of a historic modern mortuary that will provide multiple essential NHS services across the North of Scotland.
