Castleford
This project is a new build two-storey Construction Skills Hub at Castleford College in Castleford, near Leeds. The building forms part of a wider investment programme to modernise further education in the area, delivering a state-of-the-art learning environment designed to support both academic study and vocational training in advanced construction trade skills.
The building required a roofing solution capable of delivering high levels of thermal efficiency, weather protection, and longevity due to its educational use and expected high occupancy. The roof area covers approximately 1,245m² and was designed as a key performance element of the overall building envelope.
Project Requirements
The roofing works were delivered using systems manufactured by Sika, installation by roofing contractor D&D Roofing Ltd, and Meldrum Construction acting as the main contractor. The roof build-up comprised a Sarnavap® 1000E vapour control layer, Sikatherm® PIR GT 150mm thermal insulation, mechanically fixed to ensure consistent performance and enhanced thermal efficiency, and a Sikaplan® SGK-18 waterproofing membrane fully adhered using SikaRoof® Adhesive 500.
A key factor in its selection was its proven long-term waterproofing performance and durability. As an educational facility expected to experience regular use, the roof needed a robust system with minimal maintenance requirements. The chosen single ply membrane system, manufactured by Sika and coupled with a 20-year guarantee, provides long-term assurance of performance and reliability.
Its lightweight construction was also a significant advantage. Installed over a metal deck, the system did not add unnecessary structural load, making it ideal for efficient design without compromising structural performance. This helped maintain overall build efficiency while still achieving high thermal and environmental standards.
Outstanding workmanship is evident throughout the project, from large continuous roof areas to highly detailed junctions and penetrations. The quality of detailing around PV systems, fall arrest system installations, rooflights, and access hatches demonstrates a high level of skill and precision. The integration of walkway systems and clean perimeter finishing further highlights the craftsmanship and attention to detail achieved by the installation team.

Another important reason for selection was the flexibility of detailing. Single ply membranes are well suited to complex roof layouts and can easily accommodate penetrations and interfaces such as rooflights, PV systems, access hatches and safety systems. This adaptability was essential for a multifunctional educational building where future servicing and upgrades are likely.
The system allowed for quick installation where the build programme schedule was ambitious. This helped the project team maintain tight programme deadlines, which are particularly important with a live education programme and ensured earlier weather-tight completion.
Aesthetically, the lead grey smooth finish provided a clean, modern appearance, which complemented the architectural intent of a contemporary learning environment.
