TRANSFORMING WESTBURN GARDENS WITH SIKA® SARNAFIL® SINGLE PLY SYSTEM WHILE MAINTAINING AND CONSERVING THE HISTORICAL HERITAGE OF THE SITE.

Westburn Gardens is a newly developed residential complex in the heart of Aberdeen, built on the site of the historic Royal Cornhill Hospital. A key requirement of the project was to maintain the character and historical significance of the site while integrating modern construction techniques. Given the conservation status and aesthetic requirements, roofing played a crucial role in preserving the architectural integrity of the development.

The project presented significant challenges, including multiple roof levels, intricate detailing, and the need to transition from a traditional lead roofing specification to a modern single ply membrane. The new structures had to mirror the design of the original hospital, incorporating dormers, varying roof elevations, and complex shapes. The sloped design, dormers, and side slips required expert installation techniques to ensure a watertight and durable finish.

Sika Solution

BriggsAmasco, in collaboration with Sika, proposed the Sika® Sarnafil® Single Ply Membrane as an alternative to lead roofing.

The Sarnafil single ply membrane in lead grey closely matched the original specification, ensuring the roof complemented the granite façade of the building.

This solution provided not only aesthetic compatibility but also significant cost savings compared to traditional lead roofing.

The mechanically fixed Sarnafast system, along with hot air welded seams, guaranteed a high-performance and weather-resistant finish.

Project Requirements

The roofing installation involved several key components, including a Sarnavap® 500E vapour control layer, Sikatherm® PIR AL insulation, and the Sika® Sarnafil® waterproofing membrane. The complexity of the project required exceptional craftmanship, particularly around the 26 dormers, where precise application of the membrane ensured a seamless and watertight finish. The tight angles and complex junctions necessitated close collaboration between BriggsAmasco’s experienced installers and Sika’s Technical Site Support Engineers.

Project Execution

A team of three L2 NVQ single ply installers executed the work, demonstrating outstanding workmanship in handling the unique features of the roof. The project adhered strictly to conservation requirements, ensuring that the building’s original character was retained. The roofing installation at Westburn Gardens was successfully completed, meeting the client’s expectations for durability, aesthetics, and performance. The project has been so well received that BriggsAmasco has been awarded Phase Two of the development. This project stands as a testament to the adaptability and effectiveness of the Sika Sarnafil system in delivering high-quality roofing solutions in heritage-sensitive environments.
