Manchester, United Kingdom

The Manchester Engineering Campus Development at a cost of around 400 Million GBP, is a seven-year project that will deliver a new home for engineering at The University of Manchester.

As one of the largest construction projects undertaken by an institution in the UK, at over 76,000m², including a basement structure in excess of 13,000m² MECD is designed to provide the engineering community with a new campus in the heart of Manchester in 2021

Project Requirements

Lainton Services were tasked with designing and installing an array of waterproofing solutions on two basement structures and to the podium deck above, from concept to completion.

The basement contains extremely sensitive laboratory equipment, resulting in a exceptionally low tolerance for any damp or moisture. It goes without saying that water ingress would have been catastrophic for the project.

Challenges Faced

  •     Sheer Scope and complexity
  •     Very challenging site conditions
  •     Operating within a vast site, with many other trades
  •     Resourcing an ambitious program / completion target

Sika Solutions

In conjunction with our supply chain partners we ensured all deadlines were met and all materials were installed to the very highest of standards.

Lainton Services installed the robust and comprehensive waterproofing solution, using Sika’s full range of waterproofing solutions.

SikaProof A-08 was used beneath the reinforced slabs of both basements, with a combination of products including SikaProof A-08 and Cavity drain used vertically against the walls. Sikalastic 8800 was spray applied to the podium deck and was protected by SikaDrain 850 Geo providing a protection and filtration layer.
