Pitched Green Roofs

A pitched green roof system is a vegetated roofing setup designed specifically for sloped roofs, combining the benefits of green roofs with the structural and drainage requirements of an inclined surface.  Featuring reinforced layers, erosion control measures, and slope‑appropriate plantings, pitched green roofs deliver ecological, aesthetic, and thermal benefits while addressing the structural and hydrological challenges posed by inclined roof surfaces.

Design Considerations

Most Sika® NatureRoof Extensive green roof systems are installed on flat roofs where the design falls are either 1 in 80, zero falls or absolute zero falls. However, they can also be installed on pitched (sloped) roofs up to 45 degrees with the addition of specific product depending on the pitch.

When designing and installing a pitched green roof a number of elements need to be considered, starting at the initial planning phase and covering considerations such as roof pitch, roof design, roof structures, loading and the required shear resistance measures required for the desired vegetation.

When designing a roof with a pitch greater than 10 degrees, anti-slip systems are generally required, and for roof pitches greater than 15 degrees, the use of pre-grown blankets is the recommend method of planting.
