Windsor & Maidenhead
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A former primary school building required a comprehensive
refurbishment to transform it into a modern, contemporary space. The renovation prepared the facility for future use as a primary school when student numbers rise. However, in the interim, the updated space will serve as a send careers hub, operated by manor green, a special school in maidenhead, in collaboration with the Berkshire college of agriculture. The hub will support young people with special educational needs and disabilities in their transition to employment.
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
The school building had been unused for a decade and needed a comprehensive overhaul, including a roof refurbishment. Owlsworth Roofing, certified Sika Roofing Contractors, were commissioned to renovate the 1300m 2 roof. Sustainability and cost-effectiveness were top priorities for the client, The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
The roof on the primary school featured five large pyramids, which required intricate detailing to ensure it was covered correctly. This required skills, detailing and workmanship that went above the norm, and it resulted inthe pyramids being covered seamlessly along with the rest of the roof. Additionally, the perimeter guttering was complex, with numerous cornersto address. The project faced further challenges due to a very tight deadline, caused by delays in the initial tendering process. Starting in the first week of August and finishing in the second week of September 2023, the team had only six weeks to complete a project that would typically take 12 weeks.
SIKA SOLUTION
To meet sustainability, budget, and performance requirements, a single-ply roofing system was required to facilitate a timely and easy installation, reduce labour costs and ensure the project stayed on schedule.
As a result, Sika’s® Sarnafil® Advanced Technology was specified. Sika® Sarnafil® AT membrane is a hybrid technology that combines the flexibility and weldable properties of Sika® Sarnafil® single ply membranes whilst providing a sustainable waterproofing solution.
Sika® Sarnafil® AT is mechanically fixed, meaning it can be installed quickly with ease. Finished in an attractive grey, the system also exceeds sustainability targets by being the UK’s only single-ply roofing membrane that is Cradle to Cradle® Certified.
