Why Choose Bitumen as a Roof System?
Sika’s bituminous roof systems are available in two formats: reinforced bituminous membranes and hot melt structural waterproofing. The reinforced membranes are composed of polymer-modified bitumen with integrated reinforcement and are certified under BBA Certificate 19/5716. The hot melt system is a structural waterproofing solution certified under BBA Certificate 19/5682, with durability assessed in line with the design life of thestructure.
Each system type has distinct characteristics and application methods. Selection depends on factors such as substrate type, detailing complexity, and project-specific performance requirements. Sika’s technical team can provide design input based on the project’s criteria and intended use.

Build-Up of SikaShield® Bituminous Membranes
Bituminous membranes are used in roofing applications where specific performance characteristics are required.
The configuration of each membrane—defined by its raw materials and layered structure—can influence factors such as flexibility, resistance to weathering, and compatibility with different substrates.
The following section outlines how membrane composition relates to its intended use.
Build-Up of SikaShield® Hot Melt Structural Waterproofing
Sika’s hot melt structural waterproofing system is a liquid-applied membrane system designed for inverted flat roofs, podiums, walkways, and balconies. Its monolithic, non-tracking formulation supports usein areas subject to foot traffic and detailing complexity.
The system may be suitable for new build construction projects where early access to the roof is required by other trades. Durability has been assessed through BBA certification (Certificate 19/5682), with performance aligned to the design life of the structure.
Application can be carried out in a range of seasonal conditions, subject to temperature and substrate requirements. Technical guidance and site support are available from Sika’s trained roofing specialists
