SIKA SARNAFIL® PROJECT REVISITED 13 YEARS ON AT ECO FLATS IN LEEDS

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In 2010, Protech where approached by The Clegg Group for a renovation project of an eight storey 1930’s building.

Originally known as Shaftesbury House, the building was opened in 1938 to house migrant workers in Leeds that had previously been living in appalling conditions. The development had deteriorated and was eventually closed and boarded up in 1998. As part of a regeneration programme of the area, Leeds City Council co ordinated the redevelopment of the site into what is now known as Greenhouse, a mixed-use block of eco-flats.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

Known as Britain’s most pioneering low carbon development, the building promotes ecological and social sustainability.  It had the requirement to fit solar panels and wind turbines on the roof for heating the water.  This project needed a roof to fit those needs, that’s where a Sika Single-Ply roofing solution came to fruition.

SIKA SOLUTION

Sarnafil®  Light Grey G410-15EL was the technology of choice. The choice of the lighter colour was deliberate, to ensure heat would be reflected, rather than absorbed. It would also help keep the solar panels cool. Ultimately the light grey membrane would help to keep the building cooler and reduce energy costs.

Sarnafil® G410-15EL is a multi-layer synthetic roofing membrane, based on premium quality polyvinyl chloride (PVC), with an inlay of glass non-woven for dimensional stability, and self-adhesive backing. The membrane contains ultraviolet light stabilisers which resist UV degradation, and the products achieve BS 476 -3 2004 and EN 13501-5 BRoof T4®. All of this is topped off with a unique lacquered coating to resist pollutants.

“Greenhouse has been agreat project for Protech to be involved with, the history of the building makes it iconic for the city of Leeds. The social responsibility aspects surrounding not only Greenhouse as it is now but also Shaftsbury House show how important projects like this are for the community.  Revisiting the project 13 years on and getting up on the roof and seeing how great it still looks gives us a sense of pride to have been part of
something that is benefiting the local community.”
