PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Temple Park Crescent is a new build, sustainable residential development locatedon the Union Canal in Merchiston, Edinburgh. S1 Developments delivered this challenging project as developer and main contractor alongside Ashton Building Systems as the specialist roofing contractor. The goal was to provide a sustainable block of high-quality homes, which integrate fully into the existing tenement form of the street. S1 Developments specialise in challenging city centre sites, and having worked with this client for many years, we were approached as the partner of choice to find the best roofing solution to suit their needs.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

This roofing project had multiple goals; it had to be sustainable, fit into the local landscape and be cost effective.

Another important factor that needed to be considered as part of the project wasthe City of Edinburgh’s ambitious goals to manage rainfall and drainage. This meantit was essential to incorporate a green roof as part of the final design. This would not only support the planning regulations, but also help contribute to the local wildlife and flora/fauna in the area. We worked closely with the architect and client to agreea design that would be cost effective and straight forward to install – somethingthat was especially important given the complex location of the build in between the canal and a tight residential area.

SIKA SOLUTION

Working collaboratively with 7N Architects and S1 Developments, we proposed a mechanically fastened single ply system using Sikaplan SGmA-20 membrane for the green roof and Sikaplan G-18 membrane for the mansard roof and terraces.Sika’s Extensive Green Roof System was installed over 222m2.

This system incorporates SikaRoof substrate, which is made up of 100% recycled materials. The SikaRoof vegetative sedum layer is free draining, low nutrient and moisture retentive, thus supporting the commitment for improved urban drainage,an essential requirement of the City of Edinburgh. The sedum layer incorporates up to 12 plant species, which also support and promote the growth of local wildlife and flora/fauna in the area.

The Mansard Roof and terraces used a traditional flat roof buildup using SikaShield as the AVCL (Air and Vapour Control Layer), Sikatherm PIR AL as the insulation layer and finishing with Sikaplan® G-18 membrane using a mechanically fastened system.

The result is a dynamic roofing system for a modern luxury residential development in Edinburgh’s city centre. S1 Developments are delighted with yet another fantastic collaboration, having successfully met the project goals of a sustainable,cost-effective roofing system. The project has been awarded our Sika Performance Plus guarantee of 20 years.
