ACCESS BRIDGE OVER THE GRAND UNION CANAL AND YEADINGBROOK TO SOUTHALL WATERSIDE IN WEST LONDON.

 

REQUIREMENT

To establish four movement joints across the main carriageway, footway and cycle path, whilst keeping the bridge open to site traffic, including heavy lorries. There was also the added complication of a 3-degree slope side-to-side across the bridge.

PRODUCT

Sikaflex®-406 KC was chosen for its self-levelling capability (ideal to cope with the 3-degree slope) and its fast, easy application. With no option of shutting the bridge, the rapid curing of Sikaflex®-406 KC meant that traffic could continue to use the access route to the site.

Sikaflex®-406 KC has excellent adhesion to tarmac/asphalt and is available in grey and black to suit the two surfaces (black for the road and cycle path and grey for the pathway).

APPLICATION DESCRIPTION

The application was carried out over 3 days (main carriageway in two days, cycle path and pathway in one day). As the joints in each section were completed, that area of the bridge was fully open again the following day. Therefore, the need to keep the bridge open was successful.

The 20mm x 16mm (approximately) sized joints were saw cut and cleaned out with a saw mounted wire brush and hoovered to remove loose debris. A bond breaker tape was applied to the base of the joint whilst the sides were primed using Sika® Primer-3N primer.

Sikaflex®-406 KC was mixed using half the booster to increase the application time available and was applied using a 600ml barrel gun. Being self-levelling, no tooling was required and the product cured to a smooth finish.

A subsequent pull test was conducted showing the material had adhered well to the asphalt surface with no visible signs of use after just 48 hours of curing.
