Scotland, United Kingdom
An innovative and comprehensive waterproofing system supplied by Sika, the world’s leading experts in below ground waterproofing protection, has been specified for the building of a new district general hospital which is set to transform healthcare in an area of Scotland.
The £270m unit on the outskirts of Dumfries and Galloway will contain 350 beds as well as a brand new emergency care department, a combined theatre complex for day surgery, endoscopy and surgical patients, and consolidated ambulatory care.
Building work on the hospital – which will also include a heli-pad and 980 parking spaces – is due to be completed in 2017. Sika has ensured the foundations of this vital facility will be safeguarded from damp and water ingress for many years to come.
Specified by architects, Ryder Architecture, and the project’s contractors, Laing O’Rourke, approximately 18,000m2 of SikaProof®-A and 7,000m3 of Sika Watertight Concrete will help provide a total waterproof solution for the hospital’s basement and below ground floor which include kitchen areas, operational plant rooms and a morgue.
This dual system waterproofing approach contains a preapplied sheet membrane facility, the surface of which is embossed with a grid pattern containing a sealant and is topped by a thin layer of fleece which forms a mechanical bond to the concrete when it dries. The grid pattern is also unique. It provides additional protection, due to the integrated sealant, which bonds tightly with the surface of the concrete, forming mini watertight compartments. Therefore, even if the membrane is damaged or pierced, moisture or pressurised water cannot spread between the membrane and the concrete structure as it is contained within the small damaged grid square.
As a second line of defence in this dual system approach, Sika has also been specified to provide its Watertight Concrete system for this project. Sika Watertight Concrete is able to deliver maximum usable area to the occupier and complies with BS 8102:2009 Type B Construction. As a dual system approach in conjunction with SikaProof it comes with a 20 year guarantee, providing peace of mind for the client, specifier and contractor.
Sika’s waterproof membrane system was selected over competitors due to its high performance abilities in both water and gas resistance. The product range is complimented by the service offered by the operational team who provide excellent onsite advice adding to the overall performance not only as a product, but also a company.
